Children under 5 affected by chronic malnutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean.
There are an estimated 170 million children living in poverty in the 29 countries where Compassion operates our holistic child development program — including 12 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean — and we are only able to serve 2.3 million of them right now. That means that Compassion’s efforts are only touching about 1% of the need.
Children under 5 affected by chronic malnutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Children living on less than $3.65 per day in our 12 program countries.
Higher homicide rate than the global average in Latin America and the Caribbean, with gangs and organized crime a daily danger for families.
Over the next five years, God has placed a bold vision in our hearts to expand hope for the 2.3 million children currently in our care and to one million new children living in poverty, with at least 360,000 of those children in Latin America & the Caribbean. This ministry growth will take place in the countries where Compassion already works, targeting the most vulnerable children in neighborhoods of extreme need — where our holistic child development model can make the greatest difference possible.

The World Bank calls the northeast region of Brazil “the single largest pocket of rural poverty in Latin America.” The area has very little infrastructure and suffers from poor soil and frequent droughts, severely impacting the livelihoods of farmers and laborers — who make up the majority of the poor in the region. The scale of the need in these rural communities is hard to fathom, and those struggling under the weight of poverty are often undercounted due to the remoteness of the region.
God is calling Compassion to focus and expand our holistic child development program in communities of greatest need, including rural and indigenous populations in places like northern Brazil. We have intensified these efforts in recent years, including repositioning our national office from the city of São Paulo to be closer to the profound need to the north, but our work is far from finished.
Rural and indigenous children in Brazil need our help more than ever, and God is inviting us to reach them with the tangible hope of Jesus and a brighter future.
