of the world’s poor live in Africa.
There are an estimated 170 million children living in poverty in the 29 countries where Compassion operates our holistic child development program — including 10 countries in Africa — and we are only able to serve 2.3 million of them right now. That means that Compassion’s efforts are only touching about 1% of the need.

of all African children are living in extreme poverty.
Over the next five years, God has placed a bold vision in our hearts to expand hope for the 2.3 million children currently in our care and to one million new children living in poverty, with at least 500,000 of those children in Africa. This ministry growth will take place in the countries where Compassion already works, targeting the most vulnerable children in neighborhoods of extreme need — where our holistic child development model can make the greatest difference possible.

More than 70% of the population lives on less than $2.15 per day in Malawi, one of Compassion’s newest program countries. Thirteen percent of children in this sub-Saharan country die before the age of 5, with at least one-third of these deaths related to acute malnutrition. Basic education is also out of reach for one out of every five children, with girls being disproportionately affected — 42% of whom are married before the age of 18.
There are similar challenges across the border in Zambia, another new Compassion program country where 64% of its population is living on less than $2.15 per day, up from 55% in 2015. Thirty-five percent of all children under age 5 are stunted, and essential resources like safe water, medicine and sanitation are sparse.
We believe God is calling us to do something about this great need, reaching 100,000 more children in Malawi and Zambia with hope over the coming years. But we can’t accomplish this without you and your partnership. Together, we can reverse the devastating impacts of poverty in communities across these two countries and give children an opportunity to reach their God-given potential.
